Passivation & Surface Treatment

Cleaning can be followed by passivation or surface treatment to restore the protective layer of stainless and other metals.

Overview

Where passivation fits

Treatment follows a clean surface.

Machining and handling can disturb the protective chromium-rich layer of stainless steel. Passivation, applied after a clean surface, removes free iron and contaminants and restores corrosion resistance. It is a chemical treatment with controlled time, temperature and rinsing.

A multi-tank ultrasonic system can sequence cleaning, treatment and rinsing, often following rust and oxide removal.

Process Considerations

Treatment decisions

Cleaning is a prerequisite.
